Preventing Slip and Fall Injuries

Slip and Fall Injury Treatment with our West Babylon Chiropractor

Wet Floor Sign to prevent slips and falls

According to the CDC, falls are a considerable health hazard in this country, costing the United States several billions of dollars every year in direct and indirect healthcare costs—and it's not just an issue for older adults. People of any age can experience slips, trips, and falls. Fortunately, our West Babylon chiropractor, Dr. Chris Hansen, offers several drug-free services to help you find relief from a falling injury—and he can even offer pointers to help you avoid falling in the first place!

5 Tips to Avoid a Slip and Fall—And What to Do if You Can't Avoid One

Ice, sand, wet floors, can all be slippery. Here's how to minimize your chances of falling:

  1. Always use your hands on rails when negotiating outdoor stairs.
  2. Wear sturdy boots with supportive soles.
  3. Avoid walking over ice whenever possible, and be sure to shovel and de-ice sidewalks and walkways.
  4. If you do have to walk over ice, take short steps, placing your feet flat down (instead of the normal heel-toe) to maximize contact with the ground.
  5. Consider placing your arms out in a T-shape, as if walking on a tightrope, to help keep your balance.

If you do fall: try to brace yourself by using your forearms close toward your sides, since this reduces the risk of breaking your wrists. If possible, bend your knees, tuck your chin, and avoid landing directly on your hips.
