What Is Sciatica?

Statistics estimate that sciatica has a lifetime prevalence of up to 40%, so chances are you or someone you know will experience it at some point. This syndrome occurs when the thick bundle of fibers called the sciatic nerve—which branches off from the spinal cord on the right and left side of the lower back area—becomes compressed by something near its nerve root. This "something" is usually a herniated or bulging disc, a spasoming muscle, a bone spur, a misaligned or narrowed joint space, or in rare cases a tumor.

The compression of the nerve leads to inflammation, irritation, and sensitivity of the nerve, which can then lead to uncomfortable symptoms anywhere along its innervation pathway.

Common Sciatica Signs and Symptoms

Since the sciatic nerve branches off from the spinal cord and provides motor and sensory information to the leg, sciatica signs and symptoms often extend into the right or left limb (depending on which nerve is affected). These signs typically include:

  • Lower back, buttocks, leg, and foot pain (often described as shooting, radiating, burning, or searing)
  • Numbness and tingling in the leg
  • Weakness in the leg or foot (a person may frequently trip on things)
  • Diminished reflexes in the foot

These symptoms can come and go depending on the time of day, activity level, or even a person's stress level. Risk factors for developing this condition include advancing age, repetitive spine movements, heavy lifting, or excessive sedentary behavior.

Traumatic accidents like car crashes and falls may also lead to sciatic nerve compression.
