Shoulder Pain Treatment with our West Babylon Chiropractor

Man with shoulder pain

If you are experiencing pain in your neck or back, your first thought is likely a trip to the chiropractor. You may not be so quick to move in that direction if the pain is in another joint such as your shoulder, but the truth is that chiropractors are experienced in treating the entire musculoskeletal system. Shoulder pain has many possible causes, and our chiropractors are trained to determine what the cause in your particular situation is and to treat it appropriately.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Some causes of shoulder pain are more easily identified than others. Because the shoulder is such a complex joint, there are several ligaments and tendons that can be strained or torn, and that may be causing your pain. This is particularly common in the area of the rotator cuff, which is a capsule composed of both tendons and muscles and that helps keep your shoulder joint properly aligned.

Even with all of the support your shoulder has from the surrounding soft tissues, the bones themselves can still shift out of alignment, causing discomfort. Alternately, symptoms in the area of your shoulder can be the result of pain being referred due to a misalignment in the neck or upper back. Other common causes of shoulder pain that our chiropractors address are poor posture and working conditions that cause you to maintain an awkward position for long periods of time.

Motor vehicle collisions and slip-and-fall injuries frequently lead patients to develop shoulder pain. Inflammation in the surrounding area may cause pain in the shoulder even if the joint isn’t directly affected, and we can effectively treat these types of symptoms also.

Professional Chiropractic Shoulder Pain Treatment

When you visit our chiropractic clinic for shoulder pain treatment, our chiropractor will perform a thorough exam to test your range of motion, strength, and reflexes in the affected area. We will also learn as much as we can about how the pain developed and what lifestyle factors may contribute to the underlying condition causing your symptoms.

Initial treatments will focus on relieving your pain and making sure your system is properly aligned through chiropractic adjustments so that no extra stress is being placed on the shoulder joint. Moving forward, we’ll also work to strengthen the surrounding muscles and tendons so that they’re better able to support the joint. This may be in the form of exercises you do on your own, and it can be combined with suggestions about how to correct possible postural issues.

For instance, there may be some simple adjustments you can make to your workstation that will reduce stress on your shoulder if that is one of the causes of your shoulder pain. We’ll also treat the affected soft tissues to help promote healing and reduce inflammation.
