Text Neck

A young woman holds her neck in pain.

Just one or two decades ago, text neck was a condition that didn't even exist. This is because back then, we didn't spend most of our time looking at electronic devices such as Smartphones, tablets, and hand-held video games. Over the last decade or so, this is a common problem for people of all ages.

How Does Text Neck Occur?

When you look down at your phone, tablet, or other wireless devices, you don't really pay attention to your posture. While you are using these devices, you are looking down for very long periods. Over time, this can cause chronic pain. It can be even more dangerous to growing children because this position can cause permanent damage to their cervical spine.

Who Is At Risk for Developing Text Neck?

Anyone can develop text neck. However, there are certain people who are more prone to the condition. These include:

  • Anyone who spends a large portion of their day staring down at a phone.

  • Gamers who choose to use wireless devices for play.

  • Anyone who works on their laptop while it is sitting on their lap.

What Are the Symptoms Of Text Neck?

The most common symptom of text neck is neck pain and soreness. In more severe cases, this condition can cause:

  • Upper back pain ranging from nagging to sharp

  • Upper back muscle spasms

  • Shoulder pain and tightness

  • Early onset of arthritis in the neck

  • In severe cases, the pain can radiate down from your arm into your hand

How Can Text Neck Be Prevented?

There are a few ways that you can prevent text neck. First, you should stretch your neck and shoulders a few times a day. Next, hold your device higher so that you aren't always looking down. Finally, and we can’t stress this enough, try putting your device down for a while.
